Japan, Britain and Italy are merging their next-generation jet fighter projects in a bridge between Europe and Asia that marks Japan's first major industrial defence collaboration beyond the United States since World War Two.

Britain said other countries could join the project, which will replace its Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes and complement its U.S.-supplied Lockheed MartinBAE Chief Executive Charles Woodburn told reporters no other partners were needed.
