Jamil Jivani: No one gets to tell me what kind of Black man to be
I believe a politically motivated defunding of police without community consultations will leave some neighbourhoods vulnerable to violent crime, such as what has occurred in New York City this year. It’s imperative that any defunding discourse takes into consideration consultation with communities that have been plagued by violence. I support a thoughtful, open-minded effort to evaluate police budgets, such as the 2017 modernization report co-authored by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders.
Among Black people, as in any other part of our society, I am far from alone in my views. Enter any church, community centre, WhatsApp group, school or workplace and you can find healthy debates on these topics. There is no racial consensus. For example, did you know that on many social issues there are as many conservative African-Americans as there are liberal?
News media has used these Twitter activists to tell a particular story on numerous occasions, such as a Black person in a leadership role who is criticized by other Black people. Why this is newsworthy is beyond me, but Black people criticizing one another is a popular story for some journalists, including at the Globe and Mail. Variations of this story have targeted Black people in a wide range of leadership positions, from police chiefs to non-profit executives to political candidates.
