We chat with HalloweenEnds star jamesjcourtney about his time as Michael Myers, how the horror film differs from other productions, and more:
Haddonfield is finally putting evil to bed in Halloween Ends. The third and final installment in David Gordon Green's sequel trilogy picks up a few years after its predecessor and sees Laurie Strode and Allyson coming to terms with Karen's death at the end of Halloween Kills, only for their efforts to be derailed when Michael Myers surfaces once again.
Ryan Turek, the exec from Blumhouse who put it all together, and his wife; Christopher Nelson, the special effects makeup guy, and his partner Stef; Nick Castle and I are just insanely good friends. It's crazy, we talk on the phone all the time, we traveled together. Andi Matichak and Dylan [Arnold], and now Rohan, the new star in the film.
James Jude Courtney: I think the fascinating part about this is, because time has passed, this character has been weakened and dilapidated. But through the process of the film, [he's] re-energized. There's this sort of metaphysical recharging that happens. And then, of course, Laurie, thinking that she's put this all down, has to deal with the insanity of Michael again.
With Halloween 2018, we're dealing with a woman who has alcohol issues. And Jamie, of course, has been sober for 22 years, as well as dealing with family issues and mental health issues. In Halloween Kills, we're dealing with the mob mentality, and how pressing was that? That happened before Jan. 6, when we shot that film, so this film as well, deals with issues.
So, as we were about to start to shoot the final sequence, I asked Jamie to step aside, and we went beat-by-beat through the fight. We looked in each other's eyes, our eyes welled up with tears. Tears went down my cheeks. The fight scene is powerful. It's violent, it's an emotional release, it's erotic; it's the combination of all these really nuanced levels.
