Jake McCarthy had a career-high four hits, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the fading Chicago White Sox 10-5 on Saturday night.
CHICAGO — When he arrived in the majors last season, Diamondbacks outfielder Jake McCarthy had a pronounced leg kick and a swing geared for damage. His results, however, left him convinced it was not the right swing — not for him, at least.
McCarthy was quick to point out that, on this night — which happened to be the one-year anniversary of his major league debut — there might have been some good fortune involved. He legged out an infield single in one at-bat. He bounced another off White Sox reliever Joe Kelly’s knee. There was also a well-placed grounder that found a hole.
Through 195 at-bats this season, McCarthy owns a .292/.353/.431 line. Though he has four home runs, most of his extra base hits — he also has 13 doubles and a triple — have been generated by his speed and/or aggressiveness on the bases. He found himself too focused on mechanics, too locked in on trying to get off the perfect swing. McCarthy determined he needed fewer things on his mind at the plate and decided to make his swing as simple as possible.
