Fresh off a recent trip to Germany, the NDP’s Jagmeet Singh shares what he learned from Chancellor Olaf Scholz about winning elections and courting disillusioned Canadians.

Less than a day after returning from a weeklong visit to Germany, the NDP leader had already hopped on the phone to discuss his jam-packed trip, which saw Singh hold his first meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz, rub shoulders with a bevy of officials and participate in panel discussions on security and democracy.

But the NDP leader — along with MPs Heather McPherson and Charlie Angus and national director Anne McGrath — visited Germany for another reason, too. So Singh and his team met with the SPD’s directors of strategy and campaigning to take a look behind the scenes. For example, strategists became more thoughtful about their use of colour and fonts to convey to the public that the party, Scholz and his candidates presented a unified front with the same message. It was based on a strategy, McGrath said, of the party declaring “unapologetically” what it is.

Coincidentally, Singh’s trip took him away from Ottawa during much of the fallout of the Ontario government’s attempt to use the notwithstanding clause in a bill to block school support staff from striking and to impose contracts on them.
