In a speech today, Jagmeet Singh recalled a time when a free big bag of pierogis made the difference between being able to eat or not. The story seemed designed to counter the popularly held image of him as the wealthy, fashionable socialist.

Jagmeet Singh went off script during a speech to caucus on Wednesday to talk about a time in his life when donations of discount pierogies from a family friend were a determining factor in whether he and his brother would need to skip a meal. “I think a lot about how it feels to be worried about making ends meet,” he said. “I think back to the time when I had to work three jobs … and take care of my family.”
He branched out from his prepared remarks marking the new legislative sitting to offer a snapshot of a time in his life when, at 20, he was supporting his 15-year-old brother because his father had stopped working due to addiction. Most days, he would worry about having enough money to put food on the table, he said.
