Woman who told News4JAX about her rent hike, has her lease offer rescinded and has to find a new place to live.

Kelsey Christ worries it’s retaliation for speaking out against the property management company. The property management company tells News4JAX, it’s within its rights.

Christ and her significant other moved into an apartment at Luxor Club on the southside in December of 2019 and hoped to stay there for a few years until they could buy a house. And soon, her apartment wont be available to her either.Earlier this week, Christ told News4JAX, going from a base rent of $1,434 in 2020, to an initial offer to renew her lease this year at a base rent of $2,034. That’s an increase of about 42%. That doesn’t include additional fees such as trash, pet fees or storage.

“I never got that. This would be the only thing that to me would say ‘hey this is a legally binding agreement’,” Christ said. “I was never told that myself. They told my significant other that but it was on a sticky note.”The company said she never asked for it in writing. But Christ said even with the discount, she still wouldn’t be able to afford the rent hike.

Now, Fort Family Investments says it’s offered to refund her deposits and let her move out now without incurring the usual charges and it’s also rescinded its offer for her to renew her lease, citing ‘prohibitive conduct.’“Absolutely because it is the direct consequence of my action of speaking to the news,” she said.
