Now that markets have recovered, there's one date on the calendar that CEOs are eyeing warily: the 2020 elections.

"Most of the CEOs I'm talking to would like to get something done this year and not have to deal with the noise of next year," Ritchert said."People are going to really drive hard to get things done this year in a known environment." Merger prospects turned around recently after markets rebounded in January and February and the Federal Reserve signaled that slowing growth around the world made it pause its campaign of raising interest rates. That soothed concerns that a recession could strike in 2019, giving business leaders a window to attempt deals this year, Ritchert said.
