After more than two months, Italy has announced its first, tiny decrease in active coronavirus cases. Small moves in the right direction by key statistics give Italians 'the strength to go forward,' the leader of the country's pandemic response said.
As they hailed the good news, Italian health officials also reported 2,256 new coronavirus cases on Monday — the lowest figure since early March, NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports.
The pandemic has taken a harsh toll on Italy, where 24,114 people have died from COVID-19 – second only to the U.S., where more than 42,000 people have died from the respiratory disease.
