NEW WATERFORD — David MacKinnon and his teammates didn’t know what to expect when the New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic began in 1982.
With the local radio stations and newspapers covering the tournament throughout, MacKinnon felt like a professional player despite being at the high school level.“It was like we were in the Olympics,” said MacKinnon, whose younger brothers, Doug and Blair, would play in the tournament in later years.
During the tournament, the Bears posted a 2-2 record in the round robin and unfortunately didn’t make it to the semifinal games, but not because they weren’t competitive. While the basketball calibre was beyond his expectations, MacKinnon said one of the best parts of the tournament was being able to stay in the school with the other teams.
