Dealers cannot go against their licensing agreements with manufacturers
I have a 2016 BMW X1 with 67,000 kilometres on the odometer. I recently started getting a “secure vehicle from rolling” error message. I did some internet sleuthing and discovered that this is a common problem with X1′s and that it is caused by a $10 spring in the gear selector that wears out.
Unfortunately, I also discovered that most dealerships will recommend replacing the entire gear selector at an estimated cost of between $2,500 and $4,000. I contacted BMW customer service about this issue thinking that because the problem is the result of a design defect and because it would appear to be a safety issue that there might be a recall that I missed or that they would offer some kind of goodwill adjustment.
Unfortunately, their response was along the lines of “too bad, so sad.” The vehicle is working fine , so I am considering just living with the error message or seeing if I can find a shop that is willing and able to replace the spring as opposed to replacing the entire gear selector. Have you seen this problem and/or do you have any advice as to what my best option would be?The spring in question is indeed a common problem.
However, if you can find a local BMW specialist or even an import specialist and supply them the spring, I’m sure they can help. There are plenty of videos online showing the procedure. While it may be a bit of a pain to do, I’m sure it’s within the skill level of a high-end DIY’er or any licensed auto technician.
