I remember the first time I saw my mother vote. She took me to a small, nondescript building in a neighborhood we rarely frequented. There were Black and Brown people standing quietly outside in a single-file line; in their hands were extraneous booklets, flyers, small pieces of paper, and, sometimes, nothing at all. It was late in the evening after she had already worked 10 hours as a social worker in Alameda County, California.
For working-class Black women like my mother, voting was a foundational way to express political attitudes and beliefs. It was a way to use her voice to advocate for issues facing her community, a place where she frequently felt powerless.
