While everyone watches the Brazilian Amazon burn, fires also continue to spread throughout tropical rainforests worldwide

Slash and burn farming techniques where farmers cut down some of the vegetation and set the rest on fire might be a cheap way to clear the land, but it’s also a troubling one which leads to deforestation, soil erosion and biodiversity loss. Burning rainforests also release carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. This means that these bigger and more frequent fires will increasingly make more of a contribution to climate change.
