The planet is headed towards a water scarcity crisis fed in part by rising demands for meat, technology and chocolate

Canadians, living in a large, sparsely populated country awash in fresh water, may not be aware of it, but the planet is headed towards a water scarcity crisis fed in part by rising demands for meat, technology and even chocolate, according to a new report.

Beef followed at more than 15,000 litres per kg and one pair of jeans takes 9,600 litres, it said. A pair of leather shoes requires more than double that. It will also force large companies that have traditionally focused their environmental, social and governance decision-making on greenhouse gas emissions to widen their scope to include water stress, the bank said.

Even as consumers turn to electric cars to lower their carbon footprints and address climate change, they should note that a Tesla Model S with an 85 kilowatt-hour battery pack requires 112 pounds of lithium, according to the report. And it takes about 1 million gallons to produce a ton of the metal in Chile, one of the world’s largest lithium miners, the bank said. That works out to 255,623 litres of water for the lithium in each car’s battery pack.
