Olesia Gladka and her husband, Myroslav, came to Rochester to live with her in-laws in June 2022, escaping the endless violence in Ukraine since Russia invaded
Olesia Gladka came to Catholic Charities seeking help and now works there to support other immigrants .
"I would say it’s just getting worse and it’s kind of upsetting," she said. "I know that the world is not silent, but less and less help is coming to Ukraine, and what is happening right now that people are dying. Young men are dying fighting for their independence every single day and just funerals and just death and just dark times for Ukraine right now. But I’m really hoping that’s going to finish soon.
While the transition to Rochester was difficult, Gladka says she felt welcome by the city's Ukrainian community.seeking immigration assistance for a work permit. Once Gladka got it, she began working there to support other immigrants."You feel the credit when you have something done, especially we are doing immigration processes and when people get their work permits, their green cards, or their naturalization is completed successfully, you feel that happiness," said Gladka.
