ICYMI It's free to be active: Heartland Tour sweeps through Nova Scotian communities
Giacomantonio specializes in cardiac rehabilitation. Part of the Heartland Tour’s role as a free event emphasizes that finding ways to be active does not require money. And when one keeps healthy, that is a cost-effective way of reducing the risk of health problems and cardiac arrest, said Giacomantonio.“You don’t go to the emergency departments as much,” said Giacomantonio. “You don’t get admitted into the hospital as much.
Kelsey Rogers and her one-and-a-half-year-old son Marcus have been biking with the local Women on Wheels group since last year. She was encouraged to sign up for the trail ride by those same people and said that she liked what the Heartland Tour stands for.“I like that I’m teaching him to be active even when he can’t do it himself,” said Rogers. “And then the social aspect for him is fantastic, talking to all the people that we see regularly.
“It’s refreshing and enlightening, meeting people that were here before and new people,” said Giacomantonio. “A huge, excellent new resurgence of people wanting to get out.” Dr. Nick Giacomantonio, president of the Cardiac Cycle Society of Nova Scotia, which runs the Heartland Tour, started the awareness campaign 16 years ago with his brother, Dr. Carman Giacomantonio. - Chelsey Gould
