The countdown is on in the Alberni Valley, where the iconic Philippine Mars water bomber prepares to take its final flight.
Boat engines and hearts were revving on Sproat Lake Tuesday, as fans raced across the water to send off the iconicon what was expected to be the plane’s last day in those waters and last flight out of Alberni.
“It’s going to be the last flying boat, four engine that you’ll ever see flying so. This is it. It’s gone, it’s gone,” said Sproat Lake’s Darren Hansen.Monk was once a wildlife firefighter who worked under the historic water bomber and its sister plane, the Hawaii Mars. Now he said he is a lifelong fan, and didn’t want to miss the aircraft’s final flight.
The 80-year-old plane has taken several test flights in recent weeks ahead of its last big mission, and Sproat neighbours like Darren Hansen captured the slow, heavy movement of the hulking aircraft over the lake.“This is my childhood. We just grew up with them,” Angela Mee, a longtime resident of Sproat Lake told CHEK News.
