The first batch of reviews praise Bill Hader's performance in the sequel, though mostly agree that the film lacks the scariest moments featured in the 2017 movie.
John DeFore wrote that the story should have been told in a miniseries format due to its episodic structure. "The series grows monotonous and fails to generate an escalating dread," he wrote in the review. While DeFore praised Hader's scene-stealing performance, he said that the older cast lacked the chemistry of the younger cast from the first film, though the original cast appears in flashbacks throughout the sequel.
While the critic said that the film includes "some lively stuff" like "a few sensational cameos and interesting ideas about confronting one’s personal demons, about homophobia, abuse and depression," he noted that the sequel is similar to the first film in that it is a "virtual non-narrative anthology of standard jump-scares.
