TORONTO—Canadians may have been surprised by the news that young people under the age of 30 have such negative feelings about their life situation and life chances. But this should be no surprise—it simply reflects neglect of issues facing young people that have been largely ignored for too long. Reversing past trends, when young people were happier than old people, we now find that older Canadians are much happier and hopeful than the younger generation.

While the World Happiness Report puts special and needed focus on the under-30 population, it’s important to recognize as well that many at all age levels are struggling. According to Statistics Canada, our country has the highest level of household debt to disposable income in the G7 at 180 per cent, compared to 100 per cent in the U.S. We have relied too much on consumer spending to drive economic growth, which has contributed to the sharp rise in consumer debt.
