Israeli forces fought Hamas militants through shell-blasted buildings in the north of the Gaza Strip on Thursday and both sides claimed to have inflicted heavy losses on their foes as the battle over the Palestinian territory intensified.Israeli troops are pictured during operations in northern Gaza on Wednesday, as battles between the Israeli military and the Palestinian militant group Hamas continue.
Israel unleashed its assault on Gaza in response to a cross-border Hamas raid on southern Israel on Oct. 7 in which gunmen killed 1,400 people, mostly civiliansA key crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt has remained closed today as thousands, including hundreds of people connected to Canada, await news of when they will be able to escape the besieged Palestinian territory.
On Tuesday, 75 Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their families were the first people connected to Canada to leave the territory since the war began a month ago. The Canadian government has stressed it can't guarantee all who want to leave Gaza will be able to do so.The Israeli military said its troops had advanced into the heart of Gaza City. Hamas said its fighters had inflicted heavy losses in intense street battles.
Israeli soldiers also discovered a Hamas weapons manufacturing and storage site in a residential building in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in northern Gaza, it said.This maze of tunnels that runs underneath much of Gaza was built by Hamas, which is designated a terrorist organization by several countries, including Canada. For weeks now, the Israel Defense Forces say its airstrikes have been targeting those tunnels.
The armed wing of Hamas said it had killed a greater number of Israeli soldiers than the military has announced, and destroyed dozens of tanks, bulldozers, and other vehicles. It released footage of fighters firing anti-tank rockets and scoring direct hits to vehicles.
