Barbara Leaf, the top U.S. diplomat for the Middle East, said this week that the number of Palestinian lives lost in Gaza is likely to be higher than the 10,000 being cited by Gaza’s Health Ministry. Leaf, the assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs, told a House panel Wednesday the number of lives lost in just one month of fighting is probably “higher than is being cited.
” Biden’s remarks prompted the Gaza ministry to issue a statement for those who “question the validity” of its tally, calling on “all institutions” to review its workflow. The United Nations and other international institutions including news outlets such as The Post rely on the figures, with many experts considering the numbers provided by the ministry to be reliable — given its access, sources and accuracy in past statements.
