Israel's government approved funding on Sunday for a new settlement in the Golan Heights that will be named after President Trump.
The Golan Heights is a 700-square-mile area overlooking the Jordan Rift Valley that is home to some 40,000 people many of whom are not Israeli. The majority are Syrian Druze, a sect of Shiite Islam, as well as a small Alawite community — the sect of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Israel annexed the area in 1981, although most of the international community does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over it. Netanyahu also congratulated Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday for their recent decision to“The tribunal makes absurd charges against the state of Israel, including the scandalous claim that the existence of Jews in the heart of our homeland constitutes war crime,” he said.
