Around 100 people participated in the 2023 Polar Bear Dip in Charlottetown on Jan. 1. While the weather was warmer than previous years, some were quick to get in and get out of the water. Cody McEachernCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Around 100 people showed up Jan. 1 to take a chilling plunge into cool Charlottetown waters to kick off the beginning of 2023.

Bolton said he had completed a few test dunks in Summerside leading up to the event, to give himself some idea of what it would be like. Over the last year, Bolton said he and his brother had been challenging each other to see how long they could swim in the waters during the cold season. When a friend of his told him about the polar bear dip tradition, he said it became a new goal.

While the rainy weather wasn’t ideal for a quick swim in the water, Bolton was a bit relieved with the 7C temperatures leading up to his time to dive in.
