The grant for public engagement on the future of rail service on Vancouver Island, initially set to expire in December 2024, has been extended for another year. The $18 million grant, announced by the B.C. government in March 2023, aims to facilitate corridor planning involving First Nations and regional districts. Engagement efforts are focused on finding common ground and incorporating diverse interests, with a particular emphasis on involving First Nations in shaping the future of Island rail.

A grant for public engagement on the future of rail service on Vancouver Island that was set to expire at the end of 2024 has had a one-year extension.

Thomas Bevan, CEO of the Island Corridor Foundation, says the engagement work continues to work towards finding common ground. “But I would say that there are emerging interests that are aligned, and particularly in places like Port Alberni, there’s a lot of good thinking around potential projects, in other areas too.”

“Almost 80 per cent of Vancouver Islanders are within 10 kilometers of the corridor, so people care about this,” he said.
