Four WSÁNEĆ hereditary chiefs from nations across Vancouver Island called for an end to commercial herring fishing in the Salish Sea.
For the first time in 40 years, four WSÁNEĆ hereditary chiefs from nations across Vancouver Island came together to call for an end to commercial herring fishing in the Salish Sea.
The herring fishing season is set to open on Nov. 24, and the nations hope this declaration will immediately put a stop to it.Chief Eric Pelkey from SȾÁUTW̱ Nation says this needs to happen to help rebuild the herring population and the ecosystem it relies on. “It would lead to lesser marine mammal tourism, lesser high value big Chinook tourism, big halibut tourism. There’s a lot of money and a lot of value of leaving the herring in the water to sustain bigger fish for bigger tourism opportunities,” Short Reed said.
“They don’t spawn in the same location every year, they move around, they don’t home to the same beach,” Morley explained.
