Island Health nurses are visiting schools on Vancouver Island to administer the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to Grade 11 and 12 students. This round focuses on students who may have missed previous immunization clinics. While the program typically targets Grade 6 students, Island Health is working to ensure younger students are also vaccinated. The HPV vaccine is highly effective in preventing infections that can lead to cervical cancer, genital warts, and other cancers.
Island Health nurses are making their rounds in schools across Vancouver Island to administer the human papillomavirus vaccine to Grade 11 and 12 students.
While this particular round focuses on Grade 11 and 12 students, Island Health is also working to have younger students immunized. “When given at a young age, the HPV vaccine is nearly 100 per cent effective at preventing infection of the most common types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer, other cancers, and genital warts.”
Island Health says “the vaccine benefits everyone, no matter their sex, gender, sexual orientation, or sexual activity status.”
