An athlete from Vancouver Island has won Canada's second gold medal in the Paris 2024 Paralympics on Tuesday morning.

An athlete from Vancouver Island has won Canada’s second gold medal in the 2024 Paralympics, crossing the finish line with a personal best time.

Cody Fournie is in Paris for his first-ever Paralympics, competed in the men’s T51 200-m race Tuesday morning.Fournie finished with a time of 37.64, beating the previous Canadian record by two seconds. His previous personal best for this race was 39.71. Toni Piispanen of Finland came in second with a time of 38.55 and Peter Genyn finished in third with a time of 38.65.

Habsch came in fifth with a time of 42.35, however, his world record that he secured earlier this year in Dubai remains undefeated with a time of 35.74. The Paralympic record, which was set in Tokyo by Piispanen, also remains with a time of 36.81. The Canadian Paralympic Committee says that Fournie had a lead on his competitors by the time he was rolling into the final turn.. “Rober has always kept me working hard and I’m the one always trying to catch him. I was hoping to be neck and neck with him because I love racing him.’’Canada’s first Paralympics gold medal was also secured by an Island athlete, Nicholas Bennett from Parksville.
