A complex attack by the Islamic State group against a prison in eastern Nangarhar province continued Monday and has killed at least 11 people, a local official said.
KABUL -- An Islamic State group attack on a prison in eastern Afghanistan holding hundreds of its members raged on Monday after killing at least 11 people in fighting overnight, a local official said.
The Islamic State group's affiliate in Afghanistan, known as IS in Khorasan province, claimed responsibility for the attack. The affiliate is headquartered in Nangarhar province. The attack comes a day after the Afghan intelligence agency said a senior Islamic State group commander was killed by Afghan special forces near Jalalabad.
"We have a cease-fire and are not involved in any of these attacks anywhere in the country," he said.
