Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has rebounded since being acquitted on impeachment charges. He's gained political strength, but vulnerabilities still exist.

A Texas Politics Project poll released Wednesday shows Paxton’s approval rating has rebounded since before the impeachment trial, but vulnerabilities exist.

“If you look at a primary voter and how they’re viewing the world,” he said, “they see Paxton as a guy who beat the system and turned back the push to have him removed from office.”Ken Paxton speaks during the GOP County Executive Meeting at the Collin College Conference Center in McKinney, TX, on Oct 9, 2023.

Though he was cleared by the Senate, Paxton is dogged by several other legal entanglements, including an FBI investigation into allegations that were highlighted during his impeachment trial. He’s also under a 2015 securities fraud indictment, and the Paxton’s approval rating did not improve with Democrats or independent voters after his acquittal. The poll revealed 70% of Democrats disapproved of Paxton, compared to 53% of independents. In August 51% of independents disapproved of Paxton.

Paxton’s revenge plan could be boosted by other prominent Texas politicians. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who is locked in a lengthy feud with Phelan over the impeachment and other issues, could use his clout and $20 million campaign fund to work against House Republicans.
