Just how smart is the holographic Holmes villain?

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Trek: The Next Generation's Lt. Commander Data finds himself pitted against a Sherlock Holmes villain who might just be smart enough to defeat even him. In TNG season 2, episode 3, "Elementary, Dear Data," Data and Lt. Geordi La Forge visit the holodeck to solve a Sherlock Holmes-style mystery.

With his comprehensive knowledge of every Sherlock Holmes story, Data proves to be too smart for the mysteries the holodeck creates. In order to stump Data, Geordi asks the computer to "create an adversary capable of defeating Data." This winds up being a major mistake, as any adversary would have to be at least as smart as Data to have a chance at defeating him.

Who Is Actually Smarter In Star Trek TNG: Data Or Moriarty? While Moriarty is certainly far more intelligent than the average hologram, he cannot hope to be truly smarter than Data and his positronic brain. Moriarty may be capable of defeating Data, but that does not necessarily make him smarter. Moriarty can access the Enterprise computer just like any human on the ship, but Data has instantaneous access to vast amounts of information along with a photographic memory.

However, Data has also been constantly learning and growing, and even received a new upgrade in Star Trek: Picard season 3. Moriarty also made a return in Picard season 3, but only as a manifestation of Data's mind as he tried to reach out to Captain William Riker . Data also has years more experience than Moriarty and is not saddled with the limitation of beginning his life as a fictional character. It's unlikely Moriarty would be able to keep up.
