Calgary Flames forward Mikael Backlund takes part in training camp at the Saddledome on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023.Jann Arden in HRM helping Habitat for Humanity | SaltWireAs Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson put it: “I think the entire city of Calgary is in agreement that if Backs gets a new contract, he’s the captain. There is no doubt about that.”Now, there are rumblings that contract talks are heating up between Backlund and the Flames.
“We’ll see what happens,” Backlund said after Saturday’s practice. “It’s pretty quiet right now, but we will see what happens. We haven’t made a decision yet. Backlund’s current contract — with an annual cap hit of US$5.35 million — runs through the end of the season, so there wouldn’t normally be a rush to get his signature on a new pact.
It’s become clear over the past week and change that the dudes in the locker-room all believe Backlund should be wearing that letter. If the paperwork gets done, they think the stitchwork is a no-brainer. It’s not hard to envision a press conference where the Flames announce an extension for their longest-serving skater, then flip around his No. 11 jersey to reveal the ‘C’ is already sewn on the chest.
