Ohio State football brought in a defensive tackle transfer from Ole Miss who is pushing for a major role.
“He came with a great attitude to learn, rather than say ‘I have these skill sets. Let me just do my thing,’ ” OSU defensive line coach Larry Johnson said. “That’s the thing I like about Tywone, is that he’s willing to learn and make himself better as a player and will continue to do that.”
He doesn’t consider his previous life on the diamond a completely useless detour, though. He compared the hip mobility necessary to catch up fastballs to the techniques he now uses in the pass rush.“Better technique — getting used to all the blocking schemes, how guards react, how guards pull and stuff like that,” Malone said. “Trying to get my hands on, pass rush things on. You fully lock in on one thing, it’s much easier to understand and learn.
“You mess up — your hand is out of place, or maybe you don’t drive your knee — he’ll take advantage of that,” returning starting guard Donovan Jackson said. “Tywone is a guy that will exploit those mistakes that you have. So yeah, he’s been a great addition and great person to go against in pass rush.”
