Miner Vale said the Brazilian dam disaster could cut its sales volume by as much as 75 million metric tons this year

SÃO PAULO—Iron-ore mining giant Vale SA said its main focus after the Brumadinho dam disaster is on safety rather than restoring production, and that the tragedy could cut its sales volume by as much as 75 million metric tons this year.

Vale has been reeling since one of its mining-waste dams burst on Jan. 25 in the rural Brazilian town of Brumadinho. The collapse sent a wave of thick mud sweeping over nearby company offices and a busy lunchroom, and through the outskirts of Brumadinho, killing about 300 people.
