EXCLUSIVE: Senior officials were concerned that there would be 'uproar' and 'backlash' if either a man or a woman was used on posters advising passengers not to rummage in train station bins
Irish Rail officials spent a week trying to design an “androgynous” figure to feature on warning signs at train stations because they feared that “gender identity groups come after us” if the image of either a man or woman was used.
These raised concerns, however, and one Irish Rail official involved in the process suggested that there could be “uproar” if either of the two traditional genders were used on the posters. Another official shared the concerns, writing: “I don’t care about gender identity but I was thinking we will get backlash if a certain sex was only… shown. Maybe we won’t, but it crossed my mind. I think I am on Twitter too much.”
The designer was also asked to add a baseball cap, while Irish Rail officials suggested blurring its face and changing the colour of its top and trousers. The posters were developed to discourage people from rummaging in bins to retrieve bottles and cans that can be brought to a DRS reverse vending machine to claim a deposit.
