The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has submitted a draft decision in a large-scale inquiry into video-sharing platform TikTok.
The investigation was commenced in September 2021 and examined the processing of the personal data of children by TikTok.
The inquiry focused on public-by-default settings in relation to users under age 18 accounts and age verification measures for children under 13. The DPC also considered whether TikTok had complied with the transparency obligations under the General Data Protection Regulation in the context of the processing of personal data of users under age 18.
"As the EU Lead Supervisory Authority for TikTok, we opened this inquiry in September 2021," said Graham Doyle, Deputy Commissioner at the Data Protection Commission."This is part of the process under Article 60 of the GDPR, where we send draft decisions to other Concerned Supervisory Authorities and they have one month to review our draft decision and raise any 'reasoned or relevant objections' that they may have," Mr Doyle said.
Last week, the Data Protection Commission imposed a record fine of €405 million on Instagram for breaches relating to the processing of children's data.
