Skippy who lived with his owner in Mayo was 135 years old in dog years
A dog who was believed to be 'the oldest dog in Ireland' has passed away at the age of 27. Skippy the Border Collie who lived in Co Mayo with his owner Pat Geraghty went peacefully at 11am on Wednesday, July 6, the Irish Mirror reports.
The Co Mayo dog had been a loyal companion to Pat since he was just a pup. The 84-year-old had raised Skippy since he was just a few weeks old after he got him in 1995. Skippy was the equivalent age of between 130 to 145 in human years and lived long past the average life expectancy for a Border Collie - which is between 12 and 15 years old.Skippy was a farm dog and worked on the farm up until about two years ago.
In his final days, Skippy had lost the mobility in his legs and was unable to walk but he was looked after by Pat gave him bedding, food and medicine every day to keep him comfortable in his old age. While they don’t have official records to verify Skippy’s age, Pat’s nephew, Pearce Prior, said that he also remembers Skippy as a small puppy from visits home to Ireland in the 90s.
