Three Iraqi officials say former communications minister Mohammed Allawi has been named prime minister-designate by rival factions after weeks of political deadlock.

Free food is prepared for protesters during the ongoing anti-government protests next to a poster of Muqtada al-Sadr whose image is centered between the image of his father, Ayatollah Mohammed Sadiq al-Sadr, right, and Shiite spiritual leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, left, in Tahrir Square in Baghdad, Iraq, Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020.

The selection of Allawi, 66, to replace outgoing Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi was the product of many back-room talks over months between rival parties. “If it wasn’t for your sacrifices and courage there wouldn’t have been any change in the country,” he said addressing anti-government protesters. “I have faith in you and ask you to continue with the protests.”

According to the constitution, a replacement for Abdul-Mahdi should have been identified 15 days after his resignation in early December. Instead, it has taken rival blocs nearly two months of jockeying to select Allawi as their consensus candidate.
