Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's messaging spats with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif are the latest variation of an information war that has escalated since President Trump quit the Iran nuclear deal last year
In response, Zarif questioned Pompeo’s motives, especially given U.S. efforts to squeeze Iran’s economy via sanctions.
Pompeo is a key architect of Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, which uses sanctions and other tools to crack down on a regime the U.S. blames for terrorism and other nefarious activities. While it’s true that the U.S. allows Zarif to enter American territory, it’s partly because of rules and norms governing international access to the United Nations, which is headquartered in New York City. When Iranian officials visit New York for U.N.-related events, they are nonetheless restricted in where they can go on American soil.
