The Iowa State Fair has been canceled only five times in its 165-year history.

There was no fair in 1898 because of that year's competing World's Fair in Omaha, Nebraska, and World War II dimmed the Grandstand's lights from 1942-1945.

Fair events were held during the Spanish flu pandemic that began in 1918, as well as during the polio epidemic. After months of review and discussion, the Iowa State Fair board made the decision in a live vote during Wednesday’s board meeting. The fair will return in August 2021, Fair organizers said in a Wednesday tweet.

Gary Slater, the Fair’s CEO, has long maintained that a determination on the 2020 event needed to be made by June 15 to give fair staff and partners the time necessary to get the grounds and event schedule prepared for a possible Aug. 13 opening. The fair, which brings more than a million people to the east side of Des Moines over the annual 11-day event, was scheduled to run Aug. 13-23, 2020.
