SD72 says an investigation has determined spontaneous combustion was to blame for the fire at Carihi Secondary, which was closed to students for more than a week.

The Campbell River School District says an investigation has determined spontaneous combustion was to blame for, which was closed to students for more than a week after the building sustained damage.

“The cause has been determined to be spontaneous combustion from a reaction between cooking oils on fabrics, heat after laundering, and inadequate ventilation,” said SD72 in an update Monday, calling the fire a learning opportunity. “It was a little difficult, the initial access,” said Verdun in an interview, adding that at one point, fire crews had to exit the building “out of fear for their safety.”Eventually, they continued their interior attack, containing the fire to the school’s A-wing, which includes the gym, stage mezzanine and different classrooms.

Manning said the school was down “13 different spaces” due to the fire, meaning some students would be shuttled off-campus to different learning facilities until repairs are complete. He said A-wing would take the longest to repair.
