With a fire on either side of his small B.C. town, Mayor Al Miller says Alberta tourists remain welcome — and important — to Invermere.
The Horsethief Creek wildfire sparked on Monday, and as of Tuesday afternoon, it’d burned 966 hectares of wildland west of Invermere, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service. While the fire grew more than threefold from its early Tuesday estimated size of 300 hectares, evacuation orders and alerts remained unchanged as of Wednesday: 25 properties have been ordered evacuated, and 1,041 dwellings are on alert.
“As of Tuesday afternoon, fire behaviour was reduced due to a combination of factors: increased relative humidity, cooler temperatures, some precipitation and aviation efforts,” said the Regional District of East Kootenay in a Facebook update.Article content “If got a home here, I certainly believe that them coming out and spending time here is just fine,” said Miller. “The different agencies working on this fire are doing a great job. Anybody that has a home in or around Invermere, Windermere — the smoke certainly today is not bad, and there’s lots to enjoy here without getting in the way.”
