Ng, also the MP for Markham—Thornhill, was on the hot seat at the House of Commons ethics committee exploring the commissioner’s ruling Ng breached the Conflict of Interest Act
when Toronto-based firm Pomp and Circumstance was given two contracts for media and communications assistance.
But when Conservative ethics critic Michael Barrett asked whether, as a matter of restoring public confidence, she ought to pay back the money or even resign, Ng didn’t answer, saying only that she is taking active steps to make sure the issue doesn’t arise again. “I know you’re not going to accept the answers that I’ve provided, but I have provided my answers on this matter,” she said.
Neither contract was worth enough to trigger government rules that it be awarded after a competition, but the ethics commissioner said Ng should have known that because of her relationship with Alvaro, hiring her firm would be a conflict of interest. Ng defended that choice, especially in the context of the 2020 contract, saying it was “all hands on deck” during the early days of the pandemic to try and get information out to Canadians.
