The International Lake Superior Board of Control has released its water flow projections for January 2025, indicating a total St. Marys River flow of 1,790 m3/s (63,200 cfs). The Board also noted the closure of the Poe Lock for the season on January 15, 2025.
The International Lake Superior Board of Control expects a total St. Marys River flow of 1,790 m3/s (63,200 cfs) in January, as outlined in Regulation Plan 2012. Actual flows may fluctuate due to weather patterns and hydropower plant operations. The Compensating Works gate setting will be kept at a typical winter level (Gates #1 and #7 through #10 open 20 cm each), roughly equivalent to half-open gates. This anticipates an average St. Marys Rapids flow of about 87 m3/s (3,100 cfs) for January.
Gate #1 will continue at its usual setting, delivering approximately 15 m3/s (500 cfs) to the channel north of the Fishery Remedial Dike. It's important to note that the Poe Lock will close for the season on January 15, 2025. December saw wetter-than-average conditions in the Lake Superior basin and near-average conditions in the Lake Michigan-Huron basin. Water levels at the start of January are influenced by these December conditions. The forecast outlook for January anticipates water level changes based on water supply conditions throughout the month
