“Additionally, looking at RCMP statistics we can determine that the demand for illegal firearms is high in the Atlantic provinces. Yet, despite this data, there is a significant amount of firearm information that is not shared with CBSA from NWEST or municipal police forces – information that is integral to understanding the full scope of the firearms smuggling issue in Atlantic Canada.”The report blames much of the problem on Maine’s lax gun laws.

The report describes “a noted increase in in Atlantic Canada, which usually indicates an increase in illegal activity requiring firearms.”“A recent admission by one subject in a New Brunswick case indicates that firearms were smuggled for exchange of methamphetamine and implies a dangerous correlation of addiction causing criminal activity.

Provincial threat assessments for 2019 and 2020 didn’t provide any information on organized crime outfits smuggling guns across the New Brunswick border, says the report.
