There is a quiet street on the edge of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, that is lined with auto-body shops. On a steamy summer afternoon last month, all but a few were closed. Only one or two garage doors were open to the sidewalk, one of which was filled with what can best be described from a distance as “stuff”: a disco ball, dusty records, canvases, wooden crates, work tables, tools, boxes, framed artwork.
, dressed in a vintage white prairie minidress and a bucket hat. “Come on in!” she called politely as the Johnny Cash station blared above her head.She looked tiny compared to the 8x8-foot textile piece she was crafting on a giant loom. “I work from the back” she explained as she noticed my eyes studying the geometric nubby stitches. “Come around so you can see it from the front,” Kaufman insisted.
