The Trailroc G 280—and the rest of Inov-8’s trail midsoles, for that matter—are more about protection than plush cushioning, very similar to a stiff Salomon. According to our lab data, the shoe exceeds the very firm range in both the heel and forefoot, but our testers didn’t find the ride overly harsh; the two layers of cushioning, combined with a forefoot rockplate, proves truly effective at taking the sting out of hard and rocky landings.
Take note that Inov-8 uses its own “fit scale” graded from 1 to 5; a 1 reflects an industry-standard medium B-width, while a 5 indicates a very wide 2E. The Trailroc G 280 sits at a 3. So, on paper, it should still fit slightly wider than a medium-width shoe, but our testers found that didn’t exactly translate to a wider feeling on runs.
“The traction and stability of the Trailroc were my favorite features; on sloppy terrain, your foot stays right where it lands. I did feel that the toe box could be just a bit wider. My pinky toes were close to rubbing, so I had wear a thinner sock with this shoe. For me, the firm cushioning was great for shorter distances and for runs of up to ten miles at a time.”
