A man was seriously injured in an avalanche on Vancouver Island and required a helicopter rescue to a hospital 360 kilometers away. North Shore Rescue's helicopter was able to fly the victim directly to Vancouver General Hospital's helipad, marking the first time this capability was used.

A man has suffered serious injuries after being caught in an avalanche on Vancouver Island and required a helicopter rescue to a hospital 360 kilometers away. North Shore Rescue , a Metro Vancouver-based search and rescue team, responded to a call on Sunday regarding a backcountry slide near the Mount Cain ski area on northern Vancouver Island . The victim was partially buried in the snow and suffered from hypothermia and multiple injuries.

A team of rescuers, including North Shore Rescue personnel who arrived via helicopter, and local rescuers who hiked to the scene, quickly assessed the situation. Due to the severity of the man's injuries, it was decided that he needed to be airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital, a significant distance from the avalanche site. This marked the first time North Shore Rescue's helicopter was able to fly a victim directly to the hospital's helipad. This capability was recently granted by health authorities. The helicopter landing at the hospital allowed for 'immediate access' to trauma care and surgeons specializing in treating his injuries. Avalanche Canada confirmed the incident on its website, reporting that three individuals were caught in the slide, with one person being 'partly buried with impaired breathing.
