A new made-in-Canada COVID-19 vaccine that can be inhaled is set to enter Phase 2 human trials.

The vaccine is being developed at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

In Phase 2, set to begin in the coming months, researchers will monitor safety and immune responses in up to 500 participants, including those with other health conditions, who have received at least three mRNA vaccine doses. Phase 2 will be conducted with the help of $8.2 million in new federal funding from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research.

"If we can show the new inhaled vaccine is safe and effective, as we anticipate, the impact will be significant for human health, medical costs and better quality of life," Smaill said.
