While Lance made several impressive plays, including multiple downfield completions and scrambles for first downs, Martz was adamant that Niners fans not get their hopes up. “I’ve never seen anything about this kid that was encouraging at all,” he said. “He really has to plant himself to make a good throw. He’s not a quick decision guy. Everybody’s shot in the rear about him for being a mobile guy making plays with his feet. He looked like a fullback looking around to stumble trying to run the ball, to me. He’s not Lamar [Jackson], I don't know what he is.
Lance completed just 13 of his 28 pass attempts for 164 yards with an interception in Sunday’s ugly 19-10 loss to the Bears. Lance did rush for 54 yards on 13 carries, but it was far from enough to lead a 49ers offense that was held scoreless on their final four drives. Martz wasn't any kinder to Fields, calling him"completely awful."
Martz made a name for himself as the offensive coordinator and head coach for the “The Greatest Show on Turf” Rams, winning a Super Bowl as Dick Vermeil's OC but never getting over the hump himself when he took over.
