Ineos already produces more than 440,000 tons of hydrogen a year as a by-product of various chemical processes. The company is investing more than $2.2 billion in electrolysis projects across Europe to make zero-carbon green hydrogen. An Ineos subsidiary company, Inovyn, is a leading producer of electrolysis technologies needed to create pure hydrogen.
Like the Mercedes EQG, the Grenadier FCEV features a De Dion rear axle. The De Dion design has a rigid tube connecting the wheel hubs on either side of the car, so it behaves like a solid axle. But the drive to each wheel is via separate half-shafts with universal joints on either end that allow the rear e-motors to be bolted securely to the chassis yet still drive the wheels, while the axle delivers the articulation needed for ultimate off-road performance.
While the regular Grenadier features a solid front axle to give the articulation needed in extreme off-roading, the production FCEV will have independent front suspension, again to allow both front e-motors to be bolted rigidly to the chassis to ensure maximum ground clearance, reduce unsprung weight, and improve durability.
